On my way back from another roadtrip to the Kalahari and Northern Cape, I stopped at the tiny village of Soebatsfontein in Namaqualand (meaning ‘spring of pleading’, is said to have been named when a goatherd, Hendrik Sievert, was shot dead by a band of San after pleading for his life)- about half way between Cape Town & the Namib border. A very rural, rustic, impoverished place but with an undeniable charm. Spent a few hours showing the kids, how with a few cable ties and wire you can fix most things. Away from the glamour and bustle of the cities, this is how many people in South Africa live.
